Bahamas---A Wonderful Trip

Nassau Bahamas

Years ago when I visited the Bahamas I was very young, but I remembered a lot about the beauty of it and recorded my favorites, as I always carried my little journal with me. I remember the Playboy Club and all the Bunnies in their tiny outfits with bunny tails on back.

I remember one man asked me if I lived in the Bahamas and if I wanted to be a Bunny. Well, that was so laughable---My Mother and Father would drum me out of the family if I did. And I remembered a can coke-a-cola cost $5.00 which I shared with a friend, because being a fugal person I could not get over the cost. I suppose anyone entering the Playboy Club had a lot of money, but not us six girls from the states.

When we landed at Freeport our baggage was checked by a dog that sniffed our luggage. This was very strange to me, but one of my friends said they were sniffing for drugs and I thought of my Dramamine in my luggage and expressed my concerns. However, it was illegal drugs they were searching everyone’s luggage. It was scary but exciting.

That night we went to a Casino that was so large with people gambling at roped off tables and a Bahamian employee showed us where we could gamble with our cup of quarters. All the girls delighted in spending their quarters, but being the fugal me; it pained me to lose even one-quarter. One of the girls ordered drinks for us and the girls told me to loosen up and spend my cup of quarters and then we would to eat some Seafood.

The next day we visited the ‘Straw Market’ where the women sold such beautiful things made from straw. I got my mother a straw basket which she loved. It was so unusual with tiny shells interwoven in the straw. I have never seen another one like it.

I do not remember eating anything but seafood and I just wanted to stay in the Bahamas it was so beautiful, but as working girls during the summer; we had to return home to our families. It was such a wonderful trip for a short weekend. We planned to return for a week, but it never happened.

I had to declare my straw basket, a small seashell, and a wooden hand-drum ( I don’t know what you would call it) for my Daddy and Salt-Water Taffy for Mama.

Monterey Bay Aquarium

The Monterey Bay Aquarium is 29 years old and is located on Cannery Row of the Pacific Ocean Coastline in Monterey Bay, California. It was built in 1984 on the location of an old cannery business. It welcomes over 1.8 million visitors annually. It is a popular aquarium known all over the world. It is unique because of it location, plants and animals.

It has 623 species and benefits from an extreme flow of fresh sea water pumped in nonstop from Monterey Bay. And it displays a huge tank as the showpiece of the Ocean’s Edge Wing---it is 33 feet high and holds 333,000 US gallon of sea water. This is for viewing California coastal marine life which keeps one captivated for a long time.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium was the primary aquarium to grow live California Giant Kelp. All visitors can view the inhabitants of the kelp forest on different levels of the aquarium as they tour the amazing sights.

The Open Sea galleries features world renowned largest single-paned windows---and is one of few aquariums that is home to Ocean Sunfish in captivity.Exhibits of sea life include Jellyfish, stingrays, sea otters and other natural marine species which are above and below the waterline.
Its uniqueness never seems to stop---as it exhibits both Bluefin and yellow fin tuna. A Kreisel tank is used to display the jellyfish—I love to watch these---they are so beautiful and graceful.

Deering Seafood Festival

Deering Seafood Festival Celebrated their 9th annual Festival on the Bay at the Deering Estates in Palmetto Bay.

This was carefree and a fun place to be on Mach 24, 2013 on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The proceeds benefit the historic estate for the Deering Estate Foundation to use for the preservation.

Visitors to the festival will enjoy Florida’s best seafood and fish will be prepared by the chefs of the local restaurants. There will be cooking demos by Palmetto Bay Chefs for the adults and live entertainment during the day by the bands Red Code and Caribbean Crew on the main stage. The colorful Junkanoo musical parade is very popular with all visitors as they playfully dance through the visitors.

Pontoon boat rides were available aboard the Pelican Skipper. It was a great fun for all who cruised on Biscayne Bay to Chicken Key. And always one of my favorites is the Artists Village features paintings, photography, crafts and jewelry by local artists---their crafts were breathtaking.

Another great event was the tours of the historic homes. What a wonderful time was had by all. And I want to mark my calendar for next year to call and get the details for a family fun day.

Georgia Aquarium is the World's Largest

In 2001 Bernard Marcus envisioned the World’s Largest Aquarium for Atlanta Georgia to encourage financial growth and to provide education to the community. He did his research and traveled 13 countries and observed 56 aquariums to the smallest detail.

Bernard proved how much he wanted an aquarium for Atlanta when he donated 250 million dollars and obtained donations of 40 million---so the aquarium could open without obligation---it was debt free.

Jeffery Scott Swanagan was responsible for most of the aquarium’s creation and design. His resume included other aquariums and zoos of which he was the American Director. His brilliance of the Georgia Aquarium has been recognized many times over as millions visit each year.

After over two years of construction the Georgia Aquarium opened on November 21, 2005. It was built on land donated by the Coca-Cola Company. The aquarium building covers 13 acres and hold 8,000,000 of fresh and salt water.

Today it has over 120,000 fish, sea creatures and 500 plus different species. The physical address of the Aquarium is 225 Baker Street and hours are Sunday---Friday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Always check for “Holiday Hours” which may be different. Everyone who visits goes through a security check so everyone should feel very safe with their families. I know I am glad to know this information ahead of time.

Thanks to these two great visionaries Bernard Marcus and Jeffery Scott Swanagan  we have an amazing Aquarium to visit and enjoy for many decades to come.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is the World's Third Largest

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium was opened on November 1, 2002 and is located in Japan within the Ocean Expo of the National Government Park. It was built because the number of tourist for the park was decreasing fast. It was believed that if a new aquarium was added it would bring the tourist back.

The Japanese people name the park Churaumi because it means beautiful or graceful in the Okinawan dialect and umi means ocean in Japanese. There are 80 Species of coral and deep sea creatures, sharks, white sharks, manta rays and tropical fish. Near the Aquarium there are Dolphins Shows and Manatees Exhibitions.

Okinawa is an Island with 1.4 Million plus people and it has a plan to increase the population by encouraging couples to have more children and to invite the ones who left the island to return.

Kuroshio Sea---Aquarium is the Second Largest in the World.

Kuroshio is in Japan and located on the southern tip which makes it the best aquarium real estate in the world. Kuroshio is a new town formed March, 2006 from the fusion of two towns of Ogata and Saga from the Hata District.

Tourist gathers to the area in the summer for camping and surfing. Many volunteers are up at sunrise to help the newly hatched baby turtles make their way to the sea. They protect the baby turtles from birds and people walking on the beach.

Kuroshio is famous within Japan for its Skipjack Tuna fishing. Many fishermen fish for them since they are valuable for food and to sell.

Best Aquarium in the World

Dubai is in the United Arab Emirates which entails seven states (states are called emirates.) so Dubai is one of seven states: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain.

The United Arab Emirates is located in SW Asia, adjoining the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. It separates Oman and Saudi Arabia. This is so beautiful it takes by breath away to see such an exquisite aquarium is unbelievable.
And I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did---I viewed the videos twice. It would be great to travel there---but I would advise anyone to check with our United States Government---American Embassy first---because there are warnings.
And this is sad not to be able to travel the world and see all the beautiful places without fear of being harmed. I hope travelers from other counties can came to America and enjoy all we have to offer with being afraid.

St. Augustine Seafood Festival and Tour

This is the fun place to be in my favorite place to visit---I love St. Augustine. My sister and I went for a long weekend to see the sites and rode a trolley through town to just all the sites. It was in November so we missed the Seafood Festival which was on March 1, 2013---no video available at this time---but I will keep checking and update. Until then enjoy of of St. Augustine I love.

The lucky ones who were there had a great time of fun in the sun, seafood for any appetite, arts and crafts galore, music to enjoy, booths of food, artist booths, vendors booths---it is endless.

St. Augustine is a family trip for sure---whatever your heart desires---you will find it there. The ambiance calls me back for a visit often---I try to answer the call when I can. I enjoyed the history of the old buildings, the fort, the bridges over the water, the many restaurants, beautiful beaches and the nice people ones meets in these places. My list is never ending for all the fun events to visit and I bought the most beautiful pair of earrings. They also had a large Flea market in St. Augustine and if we had stayed another day---we were planning to attend it.

I think of St. Augustine every time I wear my earring--- and the next time I go I will get a conch shell---they are so beautiful.

So mark your calendars for the next time you feel a “Family Trip” is need to relax and enjoy a bit of life that we all work so hard to have and never get to enjoy. You will be glad you did. I am calling my sister now to see when we can go again.

May you always walk in Florida Sunshine and get beach sand between your toes.
